Dear All,
Sanford School of Medicine, University of South Dakota is considering using the NBME's Comprehensive Basic Science Exam (CBSE) as a "High Stakes Gatekeeper" assessment at the conclusion of the preclinical curriculum, to determine the students' preparedness for STEP-1 and subsequent advancement to the clinical years of the program.
Before formally adopting this strategy we are seeking input from other schools who use the CBSE in a similar fashion. We are particularly interested to learn
1. when the students take this exam relative to the end of formal classes,
2. the nature of any Board Review preparation the students undertake before the CBSE is given,
3. how the student scores are interpreted when assessing their readiness for Step 1, and
4. what options are given to students who do not meet the required benchmark.
Any input / comment is highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Manas
