    Hello everyone!

If you were at AAA in Boston the past few days, I hope you made it home safe and sound!

It was incredible and inspiring to reconnect with and meet many of you in Boston!  For those of you who couldn't make it to the lunch on Monday, I hope we'll be able to catch up on this forum and next year in San Diego!

There were 19 DHIG members at the lunch meeting - I've attached just a few of the photos, courtesy of Bob Ogilvie, Bruce Palmer and Bob's lovely wife, Betty.  There will be more photos coming in the next few days and I will be sure to share them here.

Lastly, I think it would be wonderful to highlight here what DHIG members have presented & contributed at the conference!  Would you please post your accomplishments on this thread?

For next year, we'll do this before the meeting so we can all go to each others talks, sessions and posters to support one another.

Here are some of my & my students' presentations at AAA 2015:

    • I gave a professional development platform presentation (chaired by Lorinda Smith & Valerie O'Loughlin) on Gender Gap in Academia
    • My student, Oana Rosenthal presented a poster on Sunday titled "Quantitative analytics on educational value of the unique instructional tools on the new virtual histology laboratory"
    • Another student of mine, Fred Gonzales presented a poster on Monday titled "Effective medical education resource design & integrative learning: a lesson in autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease"
    • My third student, Jessica Kahl presented a poster and a platform presentation on Monday titled: "Quantification of pattern recognition skills acquisition in histology using an eye-tracking device: firtst-step toward evidence-based histology education"

Please add your presentations on this thread - I know Michael Hortsch, Haviva Goldman, John Cork and others presented.

    Hi all,

Great to see many of you at the meeting.  The group is definitely growing quickly!

I participated in the symposium that Michael Hortsch organized titled: 'Didactic Methods in the Anatomical Sciences: How Does Technology Help or Hinder'? which he summarized nicely on the main Anatomy Connected group page.   I thought it was an excellent session and Michael did a great job presenting the issues very well in his introduction and summary of the session.  I gave a paper  "Technology and Innovation in Histology: Adapting to a Changing Landscape of Teaching in Medical Microanatomy" and discussed the 'double edged sword of technology' when it comes to streaming videos and virtual slides, and then presented examples of how we have flipped the microanatomy lab in an effort to take advantage of the positives of technology while balancing it with facilitated faculty time.

Lots of great feedback at the meeting about the slide repository, with many helpful suggestions that will help the project move forward.  Expect to see lots of updates in the coming week about progress.

Haviva, your presentation was great (as was the entire session led by Michael!) - I was inspired to try some of your methods in my upcoming histology course in fall!

    Thank you!

Thank you, Lisa, for setting this up. As I wrote earlier, it was a pleasure to interact with so many people, who are doing great work in the anatomical sciences, either teaching or research. I am happy to post a summary of my presentation.

See you next year in San Diego

"How We Learn May Not Always Be Good For Us" - Analytics of Students' Study Strategies, Educational Resource Choices, and Learning Success in a Medical Histology Course. Hortsch M.; Holaday L.W.; Selvig D., M.D.; Burk-Rafel J.; Zureick A.; Purkiss J., University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, Michigan

    Summary of the results:

    • Students strong strongly preferred learning histology working alone rather than in study groups.
    • Students increasingly gravitate to using electronic study tools over most traditional didactic offerings.
    • In addition, students report a strong preference for learning opportunities that are not scheduled and    restricted to specific times.
    • Histology resources that provide immediate and efficient feedback are also highly valued by most students.
    • Students' college major (non science vs. biomedical science) and previous histology experience correlates positively with histology examination success.
    • Motivation to learn histology (it is important for my career) is highly correlated with histology examination success.
    • Students perform better in examination if they attend faculty-guided learning experiences.
    • Histology exam success is highly correlated with always attending live lectures. Students who rely on streaming lectures as podcasts do significantly worse answering histology examination questions.
