    Dear Colleagues,

It was very nice to meet some of you at Boston. If you were there, I hope you all had a productive meeting - I know I did. It came up during several sessions a need for a national standard to identify Histology and Embryology competencies in medical education. Once successfully compiled, the next proposed step was for the AAA to present it for validation at the national level. A striking example would be the achievements of the Association of Pathology Chairs in this regard (http://apcprods.org/UME/Competencies/).

I think forming an editorial team from the DHIG group could be a start. Eventually we might have to set up a full functioning committee with nominated chair and vices. Please provide us with your insights, your willingness to contribute and/or serve in the team, and your overall thoughts regarding the process.

    Thanks,

    Manas

    Hi Manas,

It was wonderful to meet you in Boston!  Thanks for getting this conversation started.

What do you and others think about generating a google doc that we all share/add/edit content as a living document?  I'd be happy to create one if you'd like - one fore histology and one for embryology.

Unfortunately, I missed the session on competencies at the conference - could anyone share their notes from the session here?  I might ask Colby and Shawn if they have the ppt from the session that they can post on the site.

    Thanks!

Hi All, Lisa had a great idea to initiate the process. I have now created a google doc with the following credentials: Id: dhig2015@gmail.com Username: dhig2015 Password: dhig_aaa In it, you will find two documents named 'Embryology Competency' and 'Histology Competency'. My initial thought about the process is that first we need to assign broad categories for competencies and then align our session objectives tied to those. To initiate, I have penned down three broad categories to ascertain Histology Competency off the top of my head. These are: 1. Be able to identify structural components of normal basic tissue (under the light and electron microscope) and correlate their functions within the tissue. 2. Be able to identify normal organs (under the light and electron microscope) and correlate their functions within a system. 3. Be able to differentiate normal from abnormal tissue. These are very basic examples meant to initiate the process. I would appreciate you logging in and providing us with your inputs - it would be great if you left a signature in case you are editing the document directly. Otherwise, you could create a separate document with your input and I could later incorporate it in the original document once we have a consensus. If you prefer to post it simply in the DHIG wall - that could work too. For anyone not conversant with the Google Doc, you might find some answers here: https://support.google.com/docs/answer/49114?hl=en Lisa - thanks for the idea of google doc. Also, I had asked (during the meeting) the presenters of the "competency" session if they could share their slides - it would be awesome if you could follow up on that. I have some notes but having the actual slides would be way more helpful.
