Hello all,
I can't think of a better opportunity and a better project for us to collaborate than the AAA innovation grant RFP and our discussion regarding a (inter)national repository for virtual slides!
To summarize our previous discussion:
1. A centralized repository for virtual slides was considered by many, a great idea for sharing resources and for expanding access to a wide variety of slides. Number of DHIG members expressed interest in contributing virtual slides and putting effort toward setting up a centralized repository.
2. It was suggested that all images in the repository should be freely available for anyone to use, but copyright would stay with the original owner/contributor. Thus, all virtual slide data sets should be published under a creative commons license and a user agreement of the copyright before accessing the slides would be necessary.
3. The repository should offer image data sets in a variety of format (.svs, .tiff, .jpg, .stl, etc...)
4. Management and maintenance of the repository were considered to be the main issue associated with this project. AAA was identified as a suitable orgnization to take this role. Innovation grant was identified as a great opportunity to pursue initial funding to support this project and to set up an infrastructure.
Progress on this project thus far:
1. Haviva will set up a shared googld doc for DHIG members to contribute to the innovation grant proposal. I can start filling in the sections as a starting point for other members to expand upon or revise.
2. Discussion on software, server, network, bandwidth, data management and maintenance should continue to take place on this thread so many options can be considered.
- As an update, Bob Ogilvie is talking with MBFbioscience to see if they might provide a viable solution for server software- he should be able to report here what he finds out soon. If any one here has other options we can look into for setting up a server software, database and knows of a good place with server/network/bandwidth infrastructure, please let us know.
Thank you!
