  • 1.  Planning a DHIG meeting at EB2017 in Chicago

    Hello all!

Based on all the great discussions in DHIG community, we now have support from AAA to plan a DHIG members meeting (or two) at EB 2017 in Chicago!  This meeting won't be a part of the official EB program but it will allow us to informally get together and have histology-related discussions in greater depth than what we've been able to do at informal luncheon outings.

Stefanie and I would like your involvement and help in DHIG meeting planning.  We would like to schedule a conference call with any interested members of DHIG to determine meeting schedule, format, and other logistics (Stefanie will post a conference call agenda shortly).

For a productive discussion, we would like to cap the number of conference call attendees at 12.  The call will be scheduled when the most number of members can attend (but no more than 12).  If you are unable to participate but still interested in contributing, don't worry, we'll post our conference call minutes for your review and input.

If you are interested in getting involved, please let us know your availabilities by completing this doodle poll as soon as possible: Doodle: Conference Call to Plan DHIG Meeting at EB

    Hello Lisa and Other Histologists,
I know the poll is closed and It does look like you have your quota for the conference call on Thursday. I would like to get more involved and help out. Here at WVU we have been using a digitized website that we developed (scanned and annotated using Zoomify) many years ago. We added a new feature this year and had the students form small groups and work together to diagnose unknown pathology specimens. We catalogued and organized the Iowa collection into a database that is easy to use and merged it with some of our own pathology slides as well as our database of normal histology to create a working website. We used a Cloud service, Firebase, that allows students to communicate with each other and  the faculty while viewing the images. Students could draw on the pathology images as well as label, mark arrows, jot down notes, etc and could share these images and comments in real time. They could communicate with their group as well as the faculty using a discussion board. The goal was for students to recognize areas of abnormal pathology and collaborate with their group to label these areas and make a tentative diagnosis. Students submitted their results to me and I either marked it as correct or let them try again with some hints from me.  I have 1 technical person, Bruce Palmer who helps with all the development. We use Filemaker pro to organize the slides and slide data and then annotate with Zoomify and then Bruce uses some other programs to create the workable websites. I keep adding dimensions to histology because it gets so slighted in the curriculum (over shadowed by gross) yet so much of the student later learning hinges on it. With digitized histology we get less face time with the students so I add the pathology small group to bring them back into the lab and address a number of issues: linear integration of histo into pathology, more student interaction and fulfilling the ever-present shadow of student-driven independent (active )learning. So please add my name to the list of people interested is seeing what the results of the conference call. Thanks!

    Hello Histologists,

I have attached a summary of our discussion during yesterday's conference call.  Thank you to those who participated!  We welcome the DHIG to add any thoughts by replying to this post.

You will soon see new discussion threads initiated by some of the conference call participants to get us talking before EB.

    Have a great weekend!

    Hi Everyone,

It looks like we do have several topics of interest for our histology lunch.  I am hoping that we keep going with our planning as I think this will be a very useful session.  However, I suggest that maybe we should wait until the AAA program is more detailed.  By waiting, we can determine if there is a day that many of those interested in the histology lunch will also be attending the sessions and we can avoid overlap with any other activities going on to allow for maximum participation.  Once the program is released, we can narrow down our topics and choose a date.
