    Hi all,

Here is another possible topic for part of our round-table session during EB 2017.

The use of digital histology in formative and summative assessment

The participants in the round-table session would share the novel and diverse ways they are utilizing digital histology in their formative and summative assessment of histology within varied curricula. Do you have a great idea to share about assessment? Are you excited about a new approach you are using or want to try out? Are there pitfalls you have stumbled into that we should avoid?

If you have ideas or comments about this as a round-table topic please do reply to this thread and let us know. We would love to hear from you. Here’s a handful to get you started:

    • How are you using digital histology to assess learning of ‘lecture’ or ‘function’ v ‘lab’ or ‘structure’ content?
    • Are you using virtual microscopy to make assessment dynamic? Maybe your student’s are actively investigating digitized slides as part of a series of steps required to solve a problem? How does this work?
    • Are you using a specific assessment/exam software for your assessment activities, particularly in formal, summative, in-class examinations? What is it? Does it allow you to be creative in your assessment design or does it dictate the structure of your assessment?
    • Is digital histology a focus of your formative assessment? How are you using digital histology in quizzes or other low stakes assessment designed to help students identify their strengths and weaknesses?
    • With histology often distributed throughout integrated curricula rather than existing as an isolated course there is often less/no opportunity to assess students on their skills at comparing and identifying tissues from different organ systems and the value of the ‘identify this organ’ style question is much less. Are these comprehensive identification skills now going untested? Is it even a necessary skill to acquire or is it affecting student success in pathology? Are you using digital histology to test identification skills cumulatively across systems/units?

If you think that this would be a useful topic during the round-table session at EB2017, click on the "Recommend" button in the upper right-hand corner of this discussion thread (the session organizers are going to use this count as a way of 'voting' for the topics you think we should include).

If there are other topics that you would like to see included in the round-table session discussion, please start a new message-thread and contact Stephanie Attardi (who is the lead-person in organizing these round-table sessions).

    Thanks!

    Nathan
