Bob, thanks for the reference to competency-based teaching and learning. I've read the article through the window provided by my own efforts to implement a retrieval practice mode of learning as supported by Karpicke and Blunt (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/331/6018/772.abstract) and wondered if they are in the same ballpark. I've been using retrieval practice in my online Histology class for a number of years now and only after finding the Karpicke and Blunt article in 20011 did I recognize that my formative assessment efforts could also be defined as retrieval practice. See http://www.e-mentor.edu.pl/_streszczenia_eng/kolitsky_n26.html for a publication in e-mentor of my work before I found out about retrieval practice or the idea of learning through testing. I've found great success in student learning and also in advising them how to succeed in exams as the data obtained from using online teaching grade books can tell me how many times and how long they take to do the retrieval practice quizzes and this was astounding to me since it was the first time in my teaching that I could give advice to a students knowing how long they studied for the exam. Again, I would be interested in discussing the connection between competency-based learning and retrieval practice. Thanks for your comments.
Mike
