I have been in situations where a specific interest groups surveyed professionals several years beyond graduation about which of the Basic (Preclinical) Sciences they found useful in practice.  Pathology, Pharmacology, and Infectious Diseases are almost unanimously selected but Biochemistry, Anatomy, Histology, and Physiology are not popular choices.  I contend that memory attempts to be efficient by factoring out intermediate steps in the process.  This means that the busy professional answering the survey fails to recognize that without the latter Basic Science knowledge Pathology, Pharmacology and Infectious Diseases would be very hard to truly and  to interpret and integrate into the treatment regimen.  Imagine trying to understand that little piece of paper included in the pill box  without that background (not that every physician takes the time to read it before prescribing the med or the sample they are pushing on the patient).
